Is your orchid not flowering properly, and has it lost its former charm? This type of plants requires special treatment. You must adapt the method of caring for orchids to their needs, depending on the type of species. These simple rules will help you maintain the beautiful appearance of flowers. Learn how to care for orchids so they always look beautiful!
1 – USE A SUITABLE SUBSTRATE
Grow orchids in a fast-draining orchid growing medium. It can be based on moss or bark. The bark-based one drains well and helps prevent overwatering, but can decompose quickly. The moss-based one retains more water, so the orchid must be watered very carefully and it may need to be repotted more frequently.
If your orchids are not growing in a suitable growing medium, repot them to encourage better growth.
2 – EXPOSE ORCHIDS TO LIGHT
The fall sun’s rays are essential for bringing your orchids back to life.
In fact, in this season the rays are not hot enough to burn the leaves of the plant, but they are useful for transmitting all the necessary energy.
So, place your plant, even outside your house, under direct exposure to the sun’s rays.
3 – CLEAN THE LEAVES
It is important to clean the leaves of your orchids from time to time because they are often covered in dust or they are stained by limescale from the water you use to mist them. To do this, simply use a damp cloth. Be careful, do not use polishes for green plants because they do more harm than good.
4 – BE CAREFUL OF DRAINING
The number one cause of failure in growing orchids is excess water. This causes root rot and therefore the death of your plant. Water generously, once a week. But above all, drain the pot well, never leave water in the saucer and avoid watering the heart of the foliage as much as possible.
5 – MAINTAIN A GOOD TEMPERATURE
Maintain the temperature in the room between 15 and 25°C. Orchids grow naturally in average temperatures and die when it gets too cold. Exact temperatures depend on the strain you’re growing, but in general, it shouldn’t get below 15°C in the room at night. During the day, a temperature of 10 to 15°C higher is required.
6 – FERTILIZER
Add fertilizer to your plants every 10 days in summer and monthly in winter. It is an essential element for the survival of the plant. Be careful not to give too much to your flower.
7 – POTTING AN ORCHID
Every two to three years, you must repot your orchid. To do this, opt for a larger pot than the old one and fill it half with pine bark and clay balls. Place the orchid on the mixture and cover the roots.
