DIY mint syrup: the delicious and natural recipe!

In summer, a good refreshing drink is one of the most pleasant things you can have. Of all the flavours, mint is perhaps the most popular. Whether it’s water and mint, milk and mint or simply fresh water flavored with mint, surely the taste that we bring to the lips is delicious.

Industrial syrup, however, is certainly not among the healthiest foods, if we then consider the cost, we almost lose the desire to use it. Why give up something so good, we can prepare the syrup directly at home, it will be much healthier and delicious the only drawback is that it will not have that beautiful intense green color, which however is given by artificial dyes that are certainly not good for us , so it’s not a great sacrifice not to see it all in all.

Ingredients

  • 50 grams of fresh mint leaves,
  • 280 grams of sugar,
  • 600ml of water,
  • the peel of a lemon.

Preparation

We soak the mint leaves in water for at least ten minutes. Once the time has elapsed, drain them and dry them with absorbent paper. Put them in the mixer with 150 grams of sugar and mix it until you get a paste. Meanwhile, boil the water with the lemon peel, when it reaches a boil, add the sugar and mint paste and cook over medium heat for 15 minutes, stirring constantly. Once ready, remove the lemon peel and let it rest overnight in the fridge. The next day we filter everything and keep it in the fridge in an airtight glass bottle.

How to use mint syrup

This syrup can be used just like the industrial one, so we’re going to add it to the chosen ingredient, whether it’s milk, water or ice. We just need to get a handle on the doses. Because if with the purchased one we adjust by eye based on the color reached by the preparation, with this one we will have to taste to realize the final flavor. As we have already said, its color will not be even remotely the same as the industrial one, it will be very clear and less bright as a shade of green. So we may risk adding too much. Other than that, after tasting this we will never go back to store bought syrup!
