The avocado resembles the pear in terms of its shape. Its sweet and creamy flavor is very appreciated in the culinary preparation of various and varied salads . The Malagasy and Brazilians also use it as a dessert, sprinkled with sugar.
The avocado also has cosmetic virtues, because applied to the scalp, this fruit hydrates it and helps with the regeneration of hair fibers.
If growing avocado trees in the ground is only possible in tropical or Mediterranean regions, we can grow avocados ourselves inside our home.
1 – Prepare the avocado pit
- Choose one or more beautiful cores, of good size and which have not been scratched by a knife when opening them. Note that it is important to choose the pit of an “organic” avocado or a fruit whose origin you know. Because if the lawyer has spent weeks in cold storage, treatments… it is obvious that the result will not be the same.
- Clean it without damaging it, with clean water and remove the remaining flesh.
- Soak it in hot water, between 35 and 40°, for half an hour.
- Dry it for several hours in the sun or in a dry, ventilated place so that there are no traces of humidity.
- Stick 4 toothpicks into the bottom of the core. This is usually the widest part of the kernel.
- Fill a glass with water and place the pit in the glass. At least 2 cm of the core must be submerged in water.
- Place the glass in a warm place in the sun. Near a window for example.
- Regularly check that at least 2 cm of the core is well immersed in water.
- If not, add water. This is very important so that the seed can develop.
2 – The first shoots
- The small roots and the first shoots appear after a few weeks. If this is the case, it is a good time to plant the core in the ground, always with the pointed part of the core exposed to the air.
3 – Maintenance
- Repot the avocado tree after 2-3 years in potting soil. The first fruits appear after about 4 years (and if only you live in the south), so be patient!
- Place the (cleaned) core directly in light, drained potting soil (remember to line the bottom of the pot with a layer of clay balls) which you will keep constantly moist (but not soggy!). The core should be half buried, point upwards. After a few weeks spent in the heat (20°C), the core splits, a sign that the root is starting to develop; the young shoot will appear a few weeks later.
- Advantage of this method: the stage of installing the young plant in potting soil is avoided, which at the same time eliminates the (low…) risks linked to recovery.
