If you’ve never grown cherry tomatoes before, you need to start! Cherry tomatoes are one of the vegetables (well technically they are fruits) that you can grow, because they don’t require much care and once planted, they will grow fast! Learn how to grow cherry tomatoes and enjoy the benefits of these delicious little tomatoes that are excellent in salads, in sandwiches or on their own!
Seeds :
You can choose to plant your cherry tomatoes directly from seeds which you can purchase online or at your local nursery or hardware store.
If you want a larger start, cherry tomato plants are available and will produce fruit more quickly.
Sowing cherry tomatoes:
– Choose good quality planting soil, preferably organic and do not use soil from your garden – you risk contaminating your plant.
– If planting in the garden, choose a location with fertile soil.
– If you grow your tomatoes in pots, choose a well-drained 20 liter pot. Growing cherry tomatoes in pots is the most popular method and literally any type of pot will do as long as it has good drainage.
– Place your plant in a sunny location where it will receive at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Make sure your cherry tomatoes are not shaded by other plants.
– Start growing your cherry tomatoes after the last snowfall. If you sow them before, they will freeze and die, so it is very important to plant them when you are sure there will be no more snow.
– Most varieties of cherry tomatoes will need a cage or support. Insert your media into the pot before filling it with soil. Then go ahead and fill the pot with soil.
– Plant your seeds or seedlings in the middle of the pot – the hole should only be a few centimeters deep.
Water your tomato plants well.
CHERRY TOMATO PLANTS CARE:
– Water the seeds or plants every two to three days.
– The soil should be moist at all times, but make sure not to overwater.
– Use a good fertilizer specifically for tomatoes once a week while your tomato plant is in the growing stage.
– Once your plant has grown, you will need to prune from time to time.
CHERRY TOMATOES HARVEST:
– Harvest cherry tomatoes after about 6-8 weeks if planted from seedlings.
– If sown from seed, add about a few more weeks to this period.
Your cherry tomato plant will continue to produce fruit until the first snowfall.
