Potatoes are actually planted between early April and mid-May. You can stick to this if you want your planted buckets to find a place outdoors. However, if you want to grow potatoes in your apartment, you don’t have to stick to the planting season. So you can start growing at any time and even harvest several times a year.
You need for the garden, balcony and apartment:
ripe, undamaged seed potatoes
a bucket (at least 10 liter capacity)
broken clay, expanded clay or gravel
potting soil
compost
soil planting instructions:
1 step
Pre-sprouted potatoes are ideal for growing potatoes in buckets. If the seed potatoes do not yet have any germs, place them in a flat box or egg carton to pre-germinate.
The essential goal is that the potatoes are at a certain distance from each other so that the sensitive germs do not touch each other later and break off. The first shoots should then appear quickly in a bright, cool place.
Step 2
So, if the potatoes have enough shoots, then take a very simple bucket and drill a few holes in the bottom of the bucket. This ensures that irrigation and rain water can drain away unhindered.
Step 3
Next, fill the bucket with an approximately 10 centimeter high drainage layer made of broken clay, expanded clay or gravel. Irrigation and rain water can drain away easily without accumulating. Potatoes do not tolerate waterlogging at all.

Step 4
Then mix potting soil with compost and fill the bucket about a quarter full with the mixture.
Step 5
(If you have a bucket with a capacity of 10 liters, you can now place three potatoes with the shoots facing up on the soil in the bucket).
Be careful, the tubers should not touch each other, which is why it is advisable to place them in the bucket at a distance of five centimeters from each other. Then cover the potatoes with about a hand’s breadth of soil and water them well.
Step 6
Then place the bucket in a warm, sunny place. This can be in the garden or on the balcony. If you don’t have one or the other, you can also place the bucket directly in front of a window.
7th step
In summer it is advisable to water the potatoes once a week. However, if it is hot, you should use the watering can several times a week.

You can easily test whether you need to water your potatoes again by sticking a finger a few centimeters deep into the soil. If it is damp, you can wait a little longer to water.
Step 8
As soon as the first potato plants protrude about 8 to 10 centimeters from the soil, cover them completely with substrate again. Repeat this until the bucket is completely filled with soil.
In the meantime, you can fertilize the potatoes every now and then. Coffee grounds are very suitable for this. You can also use a liquid vegetable fertilizer for this.
9th step
Finally, the blossoming of the potatoes is over and the leaves start to wilt, then you can finally harvest your first potatoes. To do this, simply carefully dig up the potatoes by hand.
